Family legend has it that he was a captain in the 96th regiment (local ofBurnley. Unfortunately records have been destroyed - by fire. There isalso a possibility that he or a relative was a signatory (as Johusa? withWm) to the letter 11 July 1843 to Nelson settlers after the Wairaumassacre (NB the Government brig was despatched to Auckland 30 June andreturned with 53 men of the 96th 24 July).
Family legend, again, has it that he returned to NZ Mar-May 1846 as abootmaker, Lambton Quay and took part, as a member of the armedconstabulary, in the Boulcott Farm War (16 May 46). (Troops arriving bythe "Slains Castle" 16 Feb 1845 were billeted at the Te Aro barracks. AMilitary Ordinance was posted 25 March. All settlers aged 16-60 wereliable if fit until disbanded 25 May. The 58th, 65th and 96th were alsoinvolved in the conflict. [The 65th served in the antipodes 1846-1867 andin Wanganui June 1847 to March 1861 - 176 other ranks under ColMcLeverty).
Recorded as Joseph, coal labourer, Habaergham Eaves 1851 he is said tohave 'recommended' his sons to emigrate. Others may also have done so.There is a Joseph Scholes listed as private Taranaki Military Volunteers,Fort Robert, Oct-Nov 1863.
