Charles, age 21, was admitted to the Register of Freemen of East Retford on 3 May 1831 in respect of ' servitude', ie, completion of his apprenticeship as as shoemaker. He registered as a Voter in 1843 on the basis of ownership of a house in Grove Street. (from E Retrord Council Records).

I have a copy of his indentures. He was apprenticed when he was 14 yrs old to John Thornton, the younger, cordwainer of E Retford, for seven years "in consideration of the sum of five shillings"'. The apprenticeship was reassigned to George Slaney, on the death of John Thornton, to Thomas Gyles in 1827, and to John Hoult in 1828. Charles had four masters in all

Query: Unable to trace the christening of most of Charles and Mary Jane's children. Did Charles become non-conformist, perhaps Wesleyan Methodist. like his brother George William?
