Individual Note: John Scholes of Woodhouse (b.1826):
John, the second son of the younger William Scholes, was my great-grandfather. He was enumerated in 1841 as a male servant in the house of George Shaw, farmer of Woodhouse. In 1851 he was living with his father and stepmother in Woodhouse, and described as an "agricultural labourer, aged 25".
John married Elizabeth Hill (b.1830 in Messingham); the marriage probably took place in 1855 but does not appear to have been registered. There is no entry in the Hatfield PR; it is not clear whether the marriage took place in another parish, or whether they simply stood under the old oak tree at midnight. Unfortunately the Banns Book for Hatfield for this period is missing and there is no record of banns in the Messingham PR.
John's wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Charles Hill and Martha Caulkwell of Messingham, a large viilage south of Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire. Charles was born in Scotterthorpe, a hamlet south east of Messingham; he was a butcher at the time Elizabeth was born and later a farm labourer.
Grandfather was apparently the only child of John and Elizabeth.
Thomas (b.1856) born at Slay Pits (or Pitts), a hamlet between Woodhouse and Hatfield.
John and Elizabeth were probably living in a farm cottage at Slay Pits at the time of their son's birth, John perhaps working as a labourer for one of the two farmers in Slay Pits at the time, James Schofield or William Howarth.
In the 1850s Slay Pits was a hamlet of nine houses which has, according to Ben Brown, not changed much over the years except that some houses have been rebuilt. John and Elizabeth were not enumerated in the 1861 Census as living in Woodhouse (RG9/3524 District 3); there is no indication of where they went to live, but the most likely probability is Sheffield.
At the time of his son's marriage (in 1883) John Scholes described himself as a "farmer". I have not yet found the registration of the deaths of John and Elizabeth. But I do have a copy of Elizabeth's certificate of baptism (in Messingham) obtained in 1908 and which, for some reason, is marked "Bawtry 75" in pencil.
GN113 in Bawtry Cemetry:

(No inscription for Scholes in Bawtry Churchyard.)

Can't find John in 1881 census disk. presumably he was away from home. Had he gone to Sheffield? Was living with parents at C.H. in 1871..
Where was John's grocery shop in Sheffield? Check Trades Directories. Was he in business with the Butterills?
Owned 6 houses in Armley Rd, Attercliffe at the time of his death
